About this spot
A municipal zoo located within Omori-yama Park in the southwestern part of Akita City, affectionately known as "Akiggin Omoirin no Mori." Surrounded by greenery, the zoo is home to approximately 90 species of animals including Giraffes, Lions, Red Pandas, and Snow Leopards, with close-up exhibits being a major appeal. The zoo is known for hands-on feeding experiences and keeper talks during "Mealtime" sessions where you can observe animals eating up close. The grounds are designed to take advantage of the natural topography—a leisurely stroll through the entire park while enjoying forest bathing is wonderfully refreshing. The layout is easy to navigate with a stroller, and rest areas are scattered throughout, making it the perfect size for a young child's first zoo visit. In winter, limited-season operations allow visitors to observe animals in the snow, and the zoo has long been beloved by Akita residents.
Tips
About 30 minutes by bus from Akita Station West Exit, or about 20 minutes by car from Akita Expressway Akita Airport IC; free parking is available. The grounds have slopes, so use a stroller that's easy to push. Morning visits are recommended when animals are most active; check the official posting for feeding times on the day. Children through junior high school enter free.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours. Early morning, just after opening, is best when the animals are most lively.
