Over 100 Namahage Masks from Around Oga on Display, Plus a Photo Opportunity at the Transformation Corner

About this spot

This exhibition facility lets you learn all about the namahage ritual of Oga. The "Namahage Grand Assembly Corner" features standing statues of namahage alongside over 100 actual masks that have been used throughout Oga's various districts. The sight of these masks lined up—each with distinctly different faces and materials depending on the district—is truly spectacular, and visitors are amazed by the remarkable variety, from wooden masks to those made from straw sieves. The facility includes video screenings showing the actual namahage ritual, and a hands-on experience corner where children can dress up as namahage wearing kede (straw costume) and take commemorative photos alongside their parents. As one of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage sites, "Visiting Deities: Masks and Costumes of the Gods," the namahage culture is best experienced starting with a visit to this facility.
