A Sweeping View of the Yokote Basin and Mount Chokai at Sunset from the Castle-Tower-Style Observation Deck

About this spot

A park on a hill along the Yokote River, developed on the grounds of the former Yokote Castle. The white-walled observation tower modeled after a castle keep stands in what was once the castle's inner citadel, serving as a beloved symbol of the town. From the top floor, you can take in the entire cityscape of Yokote, the Yokote River, the rural landscape stretching across the basin, and on clear days, the iconic peak of Mount Chokai. As evening approaches, the golden light bathes the basin in soft, warm hues, creating a panorama perfect for concluding your day's adventure. It's also pleasant to leisurely stroll through the park, climbing stone steps and sloping green lawns while reflecting on the history of the warlords who once ruled this land from their castle. The park is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring. After satisfying your appetite with food-tour delights, a walk up to the hilltop will settle your stomach nicely, bringing your Yokote journey to a fitting close.

Tips

About a 20-minute walk from JR Yokote Station, or approximately 5 minutes by car with parking available. Admission to the observation tower is a modest 100 yen, but note that it closes during winter—check in advance. The path to the hilltop includes slopes and stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In the late afternoon, winds can be chilly, so bringing an outer layer is advisable.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Late afternoon, when the cityscape and Mount Chokai are bathed in the golden sunset light, is especially recommended.
