Gorge Beauty of Kimimachi-zaka Rock Formation and Yoneshiro River—Family Photos in Evening Light

About this spot

This is a scenic gem representing northern Akita, where striking rock formations including Byobu Rock (屏風岩) tower along the Yoneshiro River. The place earned its name "Kimimachi-zaka" from a romantic tale: during an imperial tour in the Meiji era, a letter from the empress arrived here for Emperor Meiji. Love letters can be posted at the "Komibumi Post" (恋文ポスト) within the park. The park's appearance changes with each season—spring's cherry blossoms and azaleas, summer's deep green, and autumn's crimson foliage—all enchanting. From the viewpoint at the end of the hiking trail, you can take in the gorge beauty woven by rock walls and the river's flow. Rock faces and river surface bathed in soft evening light are especially photogenic. A luxurious finale, ending the day that began with space and science with grand natural vistas.

Tips

Just about 5 minutes by car from Michi no Eki Futatsui, with parking at the park entrance. The hiking trail has slopes and stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Though the viewpoint is reachable even for children, bring water for the walk. Allow time to descend before sunset.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. After 3 pm in early evening when golden light illuminates rock faces is most photogenic.
