Located just east of Kasajo Park, this is Yamagata Prefecture's leading art museum. It houses the renowned "Yoshino Sekigypso Collection" of French modern paintings featuring works by Monet, Renoir, Chagall, and Picasso, as well as the "Hasegawa Collection" of Japanese art including Osa Bunson's masterpiece "Oku no Hosomichi Folding Screens" (National Important Cultural Property). The museum is known for collections of surprising quality for a regional city. The tranquil exhibition halls allow you to experience Impressionist color and Edo-period brushwork simultaneously—a luxury unique to this museum. A visit after walking through all the buildings offers a wonderful afternoon immersion in masterpiece colors. The museum shop's art goods make fine commemorative souvenirs from your date.
Tips
A short walk from the Higashi-Ohte Gate of Kasajo Park. Closed Mondays. Admission fees vary depending on the exhibition; crowds may gather during special exhibitions, so check the official website. The museum may close during exhibition changes, so advance confirmation is recommended.
