Shigi-no-Yachi Pond (鴫の谷地沼)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This quiet pond, surrounded by greenery, lies near the entrance to the Zao Onsen hot spring town. A promenade has been built circling the pond, and a full loop takes about 30-40 minutes at a leisurely pace. The mountain greenery reflects on the water's surface, mirroring the fresh green of early summer and the autumn foliage in a scene that changes with the seasons. The pond is also known for its clusters of skunk cabbage (mizubasho) in spring, and small waterfalls and gazebos along the promenade add to the appeal, letting you and your child explore together wondering ‘what's next?’ Sitting at an elevation of about 900m, it stays refreshingly cool even in summer, offering a gentle encounter with waterside nature that's quite different from the ropeway's grand views. Since it's within walking distance of the hot spring town, it's perfect for a light stroll before lunch.

Tips

It's about a 10-minute walk from Zao Onsen Bus Terminal, and walking the promenade is free. The path is mostly flat but has some unpaved sections, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Hold hands with small children so they don't get too close to the water's edge. Bringing insect repellent is a good idea.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour, including a 30-40 minute loop plus a break. The late-morning hours, when the light sparkles on the water, are especially pleasant
