Stroll around the marsh near the hot spring town along the waterside footpath at your own pace

About this spot

This serene marsh, surrounded by verdant greenery, sits near the entrance to Zao Hot Spring town. A well-maintained footpath encircles the entire marsh; a leisurely complete loop takes about 30-40 minutes. The mountain greenery mirrors beautifully on the water's surface—fresh new leaves in early summer, brilliant foliage in autumn. The path is known for sightings of marsh marigold blooms in spring, and small waterfalls and rest pavilions along the way invite exploration and adventure for children. At an elevation of about 900 meters on the highland, even summer is refreshingly cool. Here you can experience a gentler side of nature at the water's edge, quite different from the ropeway's panoramic views. It's close enough to walk from the hot spring town, making it perfect for a light stroll before lunch.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Zao Hot Springs Bus Terminal; the footpath is open to the public free of charge. The path is mostly flat but has unpaved sections, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Keep small children's hands held as you walk near the water's edge. Insect repellent is recommended.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour for a complete loop plus rest breaks. The light sparkling on the water in late morning is particularly pleasant.
