About this spot

An art museum centered on "Seien Hall," the villa of the Honma family, wealthy merchants of Sakata who were so prosperous that a popular saying went: "We cannot match Honma, but we'd like to be like the clan leader." The nationally designated scenic Tsurumai Garden is a pond-centered strolling garden with Chōkai Mountain (鳥海山) as borrowed scenery, its arrangement of rare stones transported from across the country via North Front Ships quietly speaking to Sakata's prosperity as a port town. The two-story wooden Seien Hall was a reception hall for entertaining dignitaries of all eras, and the polished corridors and carefully designed rooms frame the garden like a painting. The new building hosts seasonal exhibitions of paintings, calligraphy, and crafts, allowing you to enjoy both art appreciation and garden strolling. It is a fitting place to conclude a day of seafood and history with quiet elegance.

Tips

Within a 5-minute walk of JR Sakata Station, making it convenient as the course finale. The museum may close temporarily for exhibitions or maintenance, so confirm opening status in advance. The garden features gravel paths and stepping stones, so wear comfortable shoes. Inside Seien Hall, you remove your shoes before entering.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours required. Late afternoon when the sun tilts westward provides soft light that beautifully illuminates the garden
