About this spot
A street that once thrived as Aizu's premier shopping district where the Nikko, Echigo, and Yonezawa highways converged, now lined with storehouses and wooden merchant houses retaining the charm of the Taisho era, stretching for about 1 km. Aizu lacquerware and Aizu cotton shops, beloved local sweets shops, and cafes in renovated storehouses dot the area, making aimless strolling while peeking into shops a delightful experience. Aka-beko (red cows) and okiagari koboshi dolls make perfect souvenirs for grandchildren, while lacquerware and local sake offer quality items that appeal to the grandparents' taste. The Nanoka-machi train station, retrofitted in Taisho Romanesque style, is also a photo spot; bathed in the soft evening light, the street provides a fitting and atmospheric end to your day.
Tips
Approximately 10 minutes by car from Tsuruga Castle, or take the "Haikara-san" loop bus and get off at stops like "Nanoka-machi Shiraki-ya-mae." The street is flat and easy to walk, but consider taking a break at a warehouse cafe if tired; adjust your walking range according to stamina. Some shops close early in the evening, so visit your target shops first for peace of mind.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The evening light after 3 p.m. beautifully illuminates the streetscape. Plan to arrive with time before closing.
