About this spot

An iron arch bridge spanning the gorge of the Suriagami River just beside Iizaka Onsen Station, beloved as the symbol of Iizaka Onsen. This historic bridge was built in the Taisho period and is recognized for its value as an engineering heritage site. Legend has it that a crossing called 'Jūkō no Watashi' (ten rope crossing) once existed here, where ten ropes were strung to aid passage, which became the origin of the bridge's name. From the bridge, a view unique to a hot spring district unfolds, with inns and hotels standing out from the steep river banks, and the moment you cross while listening to the river's sounds is one of the highlights of a walk through this town. You can photograph the bridge and arch from the opposite bank, or look down at the gorge from the bridge itself—the compositions you'll want to capture are endless.

Tips

A 1-2 minute walk from Iizaka Onsen Station. There is a walkway, but cars also use the road, so be mindful of your surroundings when photographing. The bridge is cool due to river breeze, but in winter it gets quite cold, so bring warm clothing. Shared bathhouses and foot baths are scattered nearby, making this an ideal starting point for strolling through town.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30 minutes. Morning light provides favorable conditions for photographing the gorge and bridge.
