The brick-built storehouse sitting room constructed in the Meiji era is designated a registered tangible cultural property, its red brick exterior and black lattice windows creating a striking presence. The interior retains sitting areas richly appointed with rare striped persimmon wood, available for free viewing. The shop sells home-brewed miso, soy sauce, and soy sauce soft serve, perfect for souvenir hunting during your food walk. Kitakata, known as 'Storehouse Town,' is said to have over 4,000 remaining storehouses, but red brick ones are rare—a must-see for photography enthusiasts.
Tips
Just a few minutes on foot from Sakauchi Shokudo, located along Fureai-dori. Viewing the storehouse sitting room is free, but availability may vary during business hours—please check with staff first. The surrounding area has storehouses scattered throughout, making a town walk between your first and second bowls ideal for digestion.
