Free Admission: Comprehensive Overview of the Volcanoes and Nature of the Azuma Mountain Range
About this spot
A natural interpretation facility located at Jodo Plateau, approximately 1,600 meters elevation, marking the midpoint of the Bandai-Azuma Skyline. Situated within Bandai-Asahi National Park, the center has clear exhibits covering the formation of Jodo Plateau, the volcanic activity of Issetsukyozan (Isseikyosan), and natural information about alpine plants and birds. Admission is free. Previewing the highlights of Azuma-Kofuji and Jodo Plateau Wetland before your afternoon stroll will dramatically sharpen your understanding of what you see. The facility also posts up-to-date information on trails and natural conditions, proving useful for checking the day's situation. Surrounded by desolate volcanic terrain, the moment you step outside the building reveals a surreal landscape that itself serves as the greatest exhibit.
Tips
Park at the Jodo Plateau Parking Lot (regular vehicles: 500 yen). The adjacent Jodo Plateau Rest House has a dining area and shop, so it's efficient to have lunch there. Use the restroom beforehand in preparation for your later stroll. The elevation is high and can feel chilly even in midsummer, so bring a light jacket from the car.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Recommended to stop here before the crater rim walk, as part of a lunch break.
