Hoki Ichinomiya Wabumi Shrine

Flow of the course

About this spot

The chief shrine of Hoki Province, nestled on the slopes of Mount Gokoro (御冠山), which overlooks Togo Lake (東郷湖). The principal deity enshrined here is Takehazuchi-no-Mikoto (建葉槌命), the god of weaving. According to legend, Shitateruhime-no-Mikoto (下照姫命), the daughter of Okuninushi-no-Mikoto (大国主命), lived in this area, which is why the shrine has long been venerated as a deity of safe childbirth. Objects excavated from a sutra mound within the shrine grounds, including bronze sutra containers, are designated as National Treasures, affirming this shrine's prestigious status despite its quiet mountain setting. Walking along the approach path enveloped by dense sacred groves, you'll feel the air grow clearer with each step. A morning visit rewards you and your family with a refreshing time when only birdsong echoes through the grounds.

Tips

Free parking is available near the shrine grounds. The approach path is shaded and the ground may be damp, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Stone steps are present, so a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 40 minutes. The early morning is when the air is clearest and the dappled sunlight on the approach path is most beautiful.
