About this spot

A stone lighthouse standing at the westernmost tip of the Shimane Peninsula with a height of approximately 43.65 meters. It is the tallest stone-built lighthouse in Japan, and its white tower gleaming against the blue sea and sky is the symbol of Hinomisaki. Climb the 163-step spiral staircase inside and the observation deck opens onto a grand panorama of the Japan Sea and the Shimane Peninsula. From the walking path surrounding the lighthouse, you can view columnar-jointed cliffs and Fumi Island (経島), known as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, and feel the power of waves crashing against the cliff up close. Due to its high historical and cultural value, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and remains a working lighthouse today.

Tips

From the free parking lot operated by the prefecture, it's about a 10-minute walk along the path. Entry to the lighthouse is 300 yen for middle school students and older (a contribution to maintenance). The spiral staircase is steep, so wear comfortable shoes. The cape is often very windy—hold onto your hat. Wear sturdy walking shoes.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The morning light creates the best contrast between the white lighthouse and the blue sea.
