About this spot

A museum dedicated to tatara ironworking, which produced tamahagane – the highest-grade steel used as the material for Japanese swords. The ironworking techniques passed down for over a thousand years in the mountains of Okuizumo are presented in an easy-to-understand manner through full-scale models of furnaces, tools designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan, and striking video displays. There is also a hands-on experience corner where visitors can actually operate a foot-powered bellows device called a 'tenbin fuigo,' allowing people of all ages to experience iron culture. Learning about the origins of 'Steel Town' Yasuki before starting the journey deepens your appreciation of the gardens and castle ruins you'll visit later.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Yasuki Station with free parking. Fully indoors, so it's safe even on rainy days. Viewing the video displays first before exploring the actual tools enhances understanding and allows for efficient touring.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 60 minutes. Early morning right after opening is quiet, and you can enjoy the video displays without waiting.
