Temple of Art: Beautiful Architecture with Red Sekishu Roof and Reflecting Water Courtyard

About this spot

GrantWa (Shimane Prefectural Art and Culture Center) is a comprehensive cultural facility integrating the Shimane Prefectural Iwami Art Museum and Shimane Prefectural Iwami Art Theater. The name, meaning "great roof" in French, perfectly captures the structure's defining feature: a magnificent roof and exterior walls clad in approximately 280,000 red Sekishu roof tiles. The central courtyard features a shallow reflecting water basin where the building and sky are mirrored on the water's surface—a landscape that is itself a work of art. The Iwami Art Museum is renowned for its collection of artworks and fashion related to the Iwami region, with a robust schedule of special exhibitions. The facility also houses a restaurant, cafe, museum shop, and other amenities, making it an ideal cultural hub in Masuda where you can spend a leisurely half day even in rainy weather.

Tips

Free parking is available. During exhibition changeover periods, some galleries may be closed, so it's wise to check the official website in advance to confirm which exhibitions are on display. The building is air-conditioned, so bringing a light cardigan or shawl is recommended for comfort. For lunch, enjoy a leisurely meal at the restaurant while still immersed in the art experience.

Best time to visit

Approximately 3 hours required. Early morning, right after opening, tends to have fewer visitors, and you can smoothly proceed to lunch in the museum afterward.
