One of Japan's Largest Climbable Ancient Tombs—Experience the Immense Scale

This massive keyhole-shaped burial mound stretches about 350 meters in length, ranking fourth in Japan by size. Even more remarkably, as a tomb whose mound visitors can freely climb, it ranks among the nation's largest—a site that makes ancient history enthusiasts' hearts race. During the Kofun period, it is believed to be the tomb of a great Kibi chieftain whose power rivaled that of the Yamato court. As you climb the grass-covered mound step by step, the sheer scale of this ancient earthwork transmits through your feet. Standing atop the rear mound, the entire Kibi landscape of rice paddies and mountains unfolds before you. A shrine is enshrined on the front mound, and a stone coffin made by hollowing remains. Visiting the nearby Visitor Center to learn about excavated artifacts and historical context deepens your appreciation for the ancient Kibi kingdom's romance.
Tips
The Visitor Center offers free parking and restrooms. The mound is reached by climbing grassy slopes, so non-slip sneakers are essential. When vegetation is thick, insect repellent spray is comfortable to have. The summit has no shade, so bring drinking water.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour. The evening sun bathes the mound and surrounding rice paddies in golden light, offering a view befitting the perfect finale to your day.
