A premier shrine in Japan with shrine buildings standing on the sea, registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Known for Taira no Kiyomori's devout faith, the crimson corridors appear to float upon the water at high tide. The approximately 16-meter-tall great torii gate standing offshore can be walked up to when the tide recedes, revealing a completely different character depending on the time of day. Partway along the corridor are the Heian-style dance platform and fire-scorched gateway projecting into the sea, both excellent spots to view the great torii straight ahead. In the early morning after opening, few visitors are present, and a special time flows with only the sound of footsteps and the sea breeze.

Tips

About 10 minutes by ferry from Miyajima-guchi. The appearance of the great torii changes dramatically with the tide, so checking a tide table in advance helps plan whether to aim for high or low tide. The approach route is one-way from the entrance, so watch out for missing views of the dance platforms.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Early morning after opening has few visitors, allowing you to walk the corridors peacefully.
