About this spot

Built by Terumoto Mori (毛利輝元) on the Ota River delta, this lowland castle is also known as "Koi-jo" (鯉城, Carp Castle)—a name said to have inspired the Hiroshima Carp baseball team. The broad moat and moss-covered stone walls evoke the castle's former glory, and restored structures on the Ninomaru (二の丸) including the main gate, flat towers, and drum tower allow visitors to experience the castle's architectural essence. The Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine (広島護国神社) is enshrined on the Honmaru (main citadel), and visitors come to pay their respects. Despite its proximity to downtown high-rises, the area inside the moat is lush with greenery, and the moat-side path where waterfowl swim is ideal for strolling. In the evening, gazing up at the five-tiered tenshu (main keep) illuminated by the setting sun beyond the moat offers a view fitting to close a day that began with prayer.

Tips

Within walking distance from Kamiyacho and the Hiroshima Museum of Art. The restored Ninomaru buildings are free to view (note opening hours). The tenshu's public access varies by season; check official information if you wish to enter. The moat-side path offers little shade, so stay hydrated in summer.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours. Evening light on the tenshu and the reflection on the moat's surface create beautiful contrasts.
