An ancient temple in Sera said to have been founded as a key administrative center for the extensive landholdings controlled by the Koyasan temple. Temple buildings are scattered along the slopes of Imakoyasan mountain overlooking the town of Kouyama. The approach path from the main gate is an atmosphere of serene tranquility, woven together with cedars and stone steps, while the vermillion gate and moss-covered stone walls speak to the depth of history. The temple grounds house important cultural properties, including a wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon. A peaceful walk along the approach through seasonal colors—cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and autumn leaves—offers a chance to calm the spirit between flower-viewing adventures, revealing another face of Sera.
Tips
There's free parking near the approach entrance. Stone steps run throughout, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Even in summer, the shade beneath the trees keeps the area pleasantly cool; insect repellent spray is recommended.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 1 hour. In the afternoon, dappled sunlight filters onto the approach path, enveloping it in an intimate atmosphere.
