Paying Respects at an Ancient Shrine Known for Its Weeping Cherry Approach

An ancient shrine in Ato Tokusa said to have been founded through a petition to Usa Hachimangu Shrine, widely known for the approximately 370-meter weeping cherry tree-lined approach. Beyond the cherry blossom season, the approach shows different charms as young leaves tint it a pale green and bare branches reveal the trees' form in winter. Walking slowly through the torii gate and past the row of stone lanterns leads to a serene precincts with towering cryptomeria trees and the shrine building, enveloped in a solemn atmosphere. This is a place treasured and carefully preserved by the community—the spiritual heart of Ato.
Tips
There is a parking lot beside the approach. The approach is paved with pea gravel and soil, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The cherry blossom season draws crowds, so for a peaceful visit, early morning or evening is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. The soft light of late afternoon filtering through the approach creates beautiful dappled shade, perfect for photos.
