A Thrilling Sea-Level Stroll with a View of the Whirlpools 45 Meters Below Through Glass Flooring
About this spot
A pedestrian walkway approximately 450 meters long built within the Onaruto Bridge's girders. As you advance across the sea while feeling the salty breeze through the wire mesh, you reach an observation room at the far end. Through the glass floor set into the platform, you can peer straight down at the swirling tidal currents of the Naruto Strait some 45 meters below. The Naruto whirlpools are among the world's largest, reaching up to 20 meters in diameter, and this is one of the few places where you can experience such raw natural dynamism created by the tidal height difference between the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea. The massive steel truss supporting the bridge is equally impressive, making this a highlight worthy of any tour.
Tips
The best time to see whirlpools is roughly 1.5 hours before and after high and low tide. Check the official tide chart in advance to confirm the best time for that day, and consider rearranging your afternoon itinerary. The sea above is windy and feels colder than the actual temperature, so bring a light jacket. Entry may be restricted on very windy days.
