A stroll-style pond garden built by the sea by the Marugame domain lord, the Kyogoku family. Centered on Hassho Pond, modeled after Lake Biwa in Ōmi, the Kyogoku family's homeland, eight islands reflecting the eight scenic views of Ōmi float upon the water, connected by bridges. As you tour the islands, you enjoy the changing landscape. The umbrella pine spreading its large branches along the pond's edge is truly magnificent, welcoming visitors as the symbol of the garden. Various structures, including the main residence and tea rooms, are scattered throughout the grounds, and the breeze carrying the scent of the sea—a characteristic of a seaside garden—gently passes through. The adjacent Marugame Museum of Art displays paintings by Millet, Corot, and other Barbizon school artists, providing a moment of calm fitting to cap off the day.
Tips
Free parking is available. The grounds have many gravel paths and stepping stones, so avoid high heels. As closing time approaches in the evening, it is recommended to first make a complete circuit of the pond, then linger over islands and tea rooms that catch your interest.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The slanting light of dusk beautifully illuminates the pond's surface and the green of the pines.
