A 5-minute aerial walk across the gorge by gondola, dramatic cliff faces of strange rock formations right before your eyes

About this spot

A ropeway connecting Kouunji Station (紅雲亭駅) and the summit station, serving as the gateway to Kankaakei, the finest scenic spot on Shodoshima Island. Spanning approximately 900 meters and reaching the summit in about 5 minutes, the gondola offers stunning close-up views of the dramatic cliff faces of strange rock formations and the dense primeval forest that create the gorge's beauty. Kankaakei was formed by ancient volcanic activity and millennia of erosion, earning it a place among Japan's three greatest gorges. Only from this ropeway can you see sky, sea, and gorge all at once—when the gondola crosses the valley, both children and adults can't help but exclaim. The aerial walk itself is like an attraction, a worthy opening to this spectacular journey.

Tips

Free parking is available in front of Kouunji Station. During peak seasons, daytime waits are common, so earlier morning departures are more comfortable. The summit is cooler than the base, so bring a jacket for everyone. Round-trip tickets are a good value.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30 minutes required. Early morning hours have shorter queues, and the crisp air offers clear distant views of the gorge.
