Forest Pilgrimage Around the Sacred Camphor Tree and German Bridge at the Principal Shrine

An ancient shrine held in deep reverence as the principal shrine of Awa Province, affectionately known locally as 'Oasa-san.' Nestled at the foot of Mount Oasa, the long approach path extending from the great torii gate to the main hall is a sacred space that calms the spirit as you walk. Before the worship hall stands a sacred Camphor Tree said to be over a thousand years old, exuding an overwhelming presence. Venturing further into the shrine grounds reveals the 'German Bridge' and 'Spectacles Bridge,' built using stone-laying techniques by German prisoners of war from the Bandō Prisoner-of-War Camp, standing today as testament to Japan-Germany friendship. This is the heart of the course, where you can enjoy both shrine worship and historical exploration in one visit.
Tips
Free parking available. The German Bridge is protected and should not be crossed; view it from the adjacent walking path. The grounds are surrounded by cedar trees, remaining cool even in summer, so bringing a light jacket is advisable.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes required. Bright midday light beautifully outlines the camphor tree's branches, and the forest stroll is particularly pleasant.
