This ancient shrine, central to the UNESCO World Heritage site "Island of the Gods" (Munakata and Okinoshima with Related Heritage Sites), enshrines the Three Goddesses of Munakata. The three goddesses are revered at three shrines: Okitsu Miya on Okinoshima, Nakatsu Miya on Oshima, and Hetsutsu Miya here, with Hetsutsu Miya serving as the main shrine. Since ancient times, they have been honored as guardians of all roads—the "Divine Sovereign of Roads"—and continue to draw visitors seeking safe travels and traffic safety. Within the shrine grounds enveloped by ancient forests, the Takaomiya Festival Grounds spread beyond the main hall and should not be missed. This sacred place is said to preserve the form of ancient ritual before shrine structures were built, and standing here surrounded by the rustling of trees, you can feel the timeless spirit of this land. The grounds also include the Second and Third Shrines, which enshrine branches of the deities from Okitsu Miya and Nakatsu Miya, allowing you to pay respects to all three shrines in one visit.

Tips

The shrine grounds feature pea-gravel pathways that are easy to walk on, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The path to Takaomiya Festival Grounds winds gently uphill through the forest for several minutes. Early morning offers fewer visitors and a refreshing atmosphere for quiet worship. Remember to visit the Second and Third Shrines as well to complete your veneration of all three shrines.
