A Premier Rest Station with Fresh Catches from the Genkai Sea Lining the Shelves

About this spot

One of Kyushu's most popular rest stations, located along Route 495 by the sea overlooking the Genkai Sea. The sales floor bustles like a fish market, with boxes of morning catches from local fishing ports lined up at every turn. Squid, sea bream, horse mackerel, and other treasures from the Genkai Sea are on display, along with freshly picked vegetables, fruits, and processed goods from Munakata farms and fields. From the moment doors open, shoppers flood in with baskets in hand. The facility also features restaurants serving fresh seafood bowls and set meals, making it the perfect lunch stop during your tour of the two shrines. Here you experience another facet of Munakata—a dramatic shift from the solemn atmosphere of the shrines to the abundant blessings of the sea.

Tips

Weekends draw lines even before opening, and parking can fill up quickly. Fresh catches and popular prepared dishes often sell out by afternoon, so arriving before noon ensures the best selection. Bring a cooler bag if you plan to take fish home. During peak lunch hours, lines can be long; consider placing your meal order first, then shopping.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Arriving before noon guarantees the finest selection of fresh seafood and prepared dishes.
