These are the ruins of a grand castle built by Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of the Chikuzen Fukuoka Domain, said to have been Kyushu's largest castle. Now developed as Maizuru Park (舞鶴公園), the ruins retain echoes of their former grandeur through massive stone walls and the historically significant Tamon Tower (多聞櫓). The highlight is the keep foundation that towers behind the main citadel. Climb the stone steps to the observation area, and you can see in one sweeping view everything you've walked—the water's surface of Ohori Park below and the building skyline of Tenjin ahead. The existence of such a vast castle ruin in the heart of the city speaks to Fukuoka's generous character. Walking through the gaps between the stone walls offers a sense of minor adventure.
Tips
The grounds feature many stone steps and gravel paths, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. The climb to the keep foundation is gradual, so remember to stay hydrated during summer. Maizuru Park is adjacent to Ohori Park and the Art Museum and is easily reached on foot. Admission to the castle ruins is free, and if time allows, it's worthwhile to linger and carefully observe the stone walls and towers.
