Climbing the Terraced Rooftop Garden – A Forest Walk in the Heart of the City
About this spot
A complex facility facing Tenjin Central Park that, when viewed from the park side, appears to be entirely covered in tiered greenery like a small mountain suddenly appearing in the city. The signature rooftop garden, the "Step Garden," is planted with countless trees and shrubs. As you climb the walking path step by step, you become enveloped in forest air that seems impossible amid the building canyon. The interesting thing about this structure is that the planted trees have grown with time and now form a verdant hill visited by wild birds. Your day, which began at the waterside, concludes in the city's forest. This spot allows you to once again experience the depth of Fukuoka's urban character at the very end.
Tips
The Step Garden's open hours vary by season, and access to the rooftop observation deck is limited to specific dates, so check the official website before your visit if you plan to go to the top. The walking path features outdoor stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The building also houses a concert hall and café, making it a nice spot to rest before heading home.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Late afternoon when the western sun softens is the most pleasant time for climbing through the green terraces.
