A white castle-shaped observation tower stands on the hilltop of the medieval mountain castle ruins of Takesaki. Climbing to the top offers an unobstructed view: Ariake Sea spread below, constantly changing with the tides, and on clear days, Unzen Fugen-dake (雲仙普賢岳) rising majestically across the sea. Turning around, you see the range of Tara Mountain (多良岳), and below lies the Takesaki settlement where you've visited Kani Goten and Kanzeon-ji—the entire day's journey visible in a single glance. Standing in the sea breeze, reflecting on your morning's underwater torii gates through this day devoted to Ariake Sea, this is the perfect finale.
Tips
It can be windy at the top of the observation tower, so bring an extra layer. Late afternoon light makes the sea shimmer beautifully for photos, but consider departing while there's still daylight for safe driving. The surrounding roads have narrow sections, so drive carefully.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. On a clear afternoon with clean air, Unzen Fugen-dake comes into sharp focus.
