An Ancient Shrine with Moss-Covered Stone Steps and Divine Monkeys—'Sanno-san'

An ancient shrine at the foothills of the Sefuri Mountains, nestled beside the Shirohara River, affectionately known locally as 'Sanno-san.' Revered as a deity of agriculture and the mountains, the stone statues of 'divine monkeys' (shinzaru), said to be the messengers of the gods, greet visitors throughout the grounds. The cedar-lined approach and moss-covered stone steps evoke a serene atmosphere, and the afternoon light filtering through the trees is particularly beautiful. Nearby stands the Kunen'an Garden, renowned for its autumn foliage, and the entire area becomes a tapestry of crimson colors in fall. Within the grounds, enveloped in deep green and stillness, offer prayers for the safe completion of the second half of your journey to the mountain deity.
Tips
The stone steps and approach paths are slippery with moss, so be especially careful after rain. During the public opening period of the adjacent Kunen'an Garden, nearby roads and parking areas become very congested, so allow extra time. The grounds have abundant tree shade and remain relatively cool even in summer.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Early afternoon when dappled sunlight filters onto the stone steps is the most pleasant time to visit.
