Thatched-Roof Main Hall and Flower Garden 'Keien' at the Top of Stone Steps

An ancient Tendai Buddhist temple said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki (行基) in the Nara period, known affectionately as the 'Azalea Temple.' Climbing the long stone steps to the top, you'll find a sturdy thatched-roof main hall standing quietly, enveloped in the reverent atmosphere of a mountain temple. Behind the main hall, the garden 'Keien' spreads across the slope of Mount Keisan, famous for azaleas blanketing the mountainside in spring and autumn foliage. Following the walking paths to higher viewpoints, you can overlook the town below and the Chikushi Plain. The temple is beautiful in every season—the dappled sunlight on the approach path is particularly lovely during lush green seasons, and visiting early in the morning allows you to stroll through the garden peacefully in the crisp air.
Tips
Keien features walking paths across a steep mountainside, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. During azalea and autumn foliage seasons, the area becomes very crowded with traffic congestion common on nearby roads; arriving early is recommended. Admission fees may vary by season, so confirm in advance if concerned.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Early morning before opening hours means fewer crowds, allowing you to slowly navigate the stone steps and garden in clear, fresh air.
