A National Treasure White Sanctuary and the Light of Stained Glass
About this spot
Japan's oldest existing church, with a white spire rising above the slopes. This Gothic sanctuary was built following Japan's opening during the late Edo period and is designated a National Treasure, as well as being registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site related to Hidden Christians. Upon entering, colorful light streams through stained-glass windows facing the main altar, enveloping the space in a solemn and serene atmosphere. This is also world-renowned as the site of the "Discovery of Christians" (Shinto Hakkens), where Hidden Christians revealed their faith after enduring the prohibition on Christianity. Combined with exhibits in the adjacent former Latin Theological Seminary, it is a hillside landmark where you can quietly feel Nagasaki's history of faith.
Tips
Photography is prohibited inside the cathedral; quiet viewing is the proper manner. The approach to the church is a stone-paved slope lined with souvenir shops, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Early morning is best, when tour groups are fewer and the stained-glass light is most beautiful. Be aware that visits may not be possible during Mass or special events—check the official website in advance. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
