You can make a complete circuit of the named hells—such as the Great Screaming Hell (大叫喚地獄) and Ito Hell (お糸地獄)—via well-maintained nature trails. Popular attractions include foot-steaming spots where you can feel the heat of hot spring vapor beneath your feet, and the famous hot spring eggs steamed in the natural vapor. Walking, viewing, and tasting—the pleasures never end. The site also holds historical significance as a site of Christian martyr executions; martyrs' monuments line the trail. Tips
The nature trails have slopes and steps, and some areas are slick with steam moisture, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The rising steam is extremely hot, so be especially cautious with children—do not lean over railings or venture beyond fences. Famous hot spring eggs are sold at shops along the trail, so small change is convenient to have on hand.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. In the crisp morning air, steam rises distinctly, there are fewer crowds, and you can walk at a leisurely pace.
