From the observation platform, the lighthouse, cliffs, and the vast expanse of the East China Sea spread before you in a single sweep. This beacon has long illuminated Japan's western waters, and is renowned as the place where the sun descends to the horizon—its appearance in amber and rust tones takes your breath away. There could be no more fitting place to conclude a day spent traveling the azure seas.
Tips
A walking trail leads down to the base of the lighthouse, but it involves over an hour of ascending and descending; if time or fitness is limited, the view from the observation platform is thoroughly rewarding. The cape is windy, so bring an extra layer. If staying for sunset, exercise caution driving the dark mountain road home.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. The sunset is famous, but the azure sea and white lighthouse in daylight are equally spectacular.
