A Cool Stroll Through a Spring-Filled Old Railway Tunnel

During extension construction of the Takamori Line (Japan National Railways), massive springs erupted and halted the project. The abandoned tunnel has been preserved and developed into a park—a site unique to Takamori Town. Abundant spring water continues to flow through a channel within the tunnel, maintaining a constant temperature year-round. In summer, the striking temperature difference makes it refreshingly cool—like walking through a natural air-conditioner. At the tunnel's end lies the 'Water Pearl,' where water droplets appear suspended in mid-air under strobe lighting, creating an enchanting sight of spheres floating and flowing in reverse. Seasonal decorations adorn the tunnel interior throughout the year, and this site has become cherished as a place that tells the story of Takamori, the town of spring water.

Tips

Bring a light layer even in summer, as the tunnel stays cool. The walkway is flat and accessible with strollers, but areas beside the water channel are wet—watch your step. Pay the entrance fee at the reception desk upon entry.
