The Octagonal Drum Tower Rising from the Grassland and Ancient Romance
About this spot
A historical park preserving an ancient mountain fortress that tradition says was built by the Yamato imperial court after their defeat in the Battle of Baekgang to prepare for continental invasion. On a spacious grassy hilltop, restored buildings including the octagonal drum tower, rice storehouses, and barracks allow you to experience the tension and prayer of an era some 1,300 years ago. The castle site is designated a national historic landmark, and the Onko Soseisei Museum guidance facility presents excavated artifacts and the castle's history in an easy-to-understand manner. Strolling leisurely across the lawn while reflecting on ancient times offers a historical walk experience found nowhere else. Free admission is also a welcome bonus.
Tips
The park is expansive with little shade, so bring a hat and water during summer. The grassy plaza is perfect for children to run freely. Previewing at the Onko Soseisei Museum before exploring the restored buildings will deepen your understanding greatly.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. The afternoon light illuminating the drum tower and grassland creates a picturesque contrast.
