The iconic symbol of Yamaga Hot Spring, this bathhouse originated as a tea pavilion built by the Higo Hosokawa clan during the Edo period. Its distinctive entry with a grand curved roof (唐破風) crowned by layered ceramic tiles exemplifies the imposing presence of what is said to be Kyushu's largest wooden hot spring structure. Beautifully reconstructed using traditional methods, the building stands harmoniously within the Toyomae Kaido townscape and serves as a popular photography spot. The surrounding streets drift with hot spring steam, inviting visitors to experience Yamaga's long bond with thermal waters and its rich history.
Tips
The bathhouse is just a short walk from the Yamaga Lantern Folk Craft Museum and Chiyodoza. To capture the building's full facade, position yourself a short distance away from the front. The surrounding streets are narrow; park in the town's parking lot and explore on foot for safety.
