An Exhilarating Cruise Down One of Japan's Three Fastest Rapids in a Wooden Boat

One of Japan's three most famous rapids alongside the Mogami and Fuji rivers, the Kumano River descent in a wooden boat is Hitoyoshi's signature attraction. The boatman expertly controls the boat with a single pole, and the sensation of gliding just inches above the water's surface is an entirely different world from viewing the river from a bridge. At the fast-flowing rapids, water sprays and cheers erupt; in the calm pools, mountains and the castle town's scenery drift peacefully by. HASSENBASSENBASSENBASSENBASSENBAS, the boarding facility, is a stylish complex with a café and shops, adding to the enjoyment before and after your cruise. This is the highlight of the course, allowing you to fully experience the history of Hitoyoshi, a town that has lived alongside the river.
Tips
Splashing is common at the rapids, so having a towel and an extra layer you don't mind getting wet is helpful. Protect your smartphone and camera with waterproof cases or straps. Advance reservations are recommended, as the number of departures is limited. Cancellations may occur due to weather or water levels, so check operations status the morning of your visit.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Afternoon departures offer beautiful sunlight glinting off the water's surface, making for particularly photogenic moments.
