Pray for your journey at the principal shrine of Higo, home to one of Japan's three magnificent gates
About this spot
The principal shrine of Higo and the head temple of the many Aso Shrines found throughout Japan, it enshrines deities including Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto (武磐龍命), said to have developed Aso. The grand two-tiered gate is counted among Japan's three most magnificent gates and was beautifully restored with support from many people after its collapse in the earthquake. The "lateral approach"—where the main path runs perpendicular to the main hall—is a rare sight found only in Aso. The grounds are dotted with auspicious spots like the marriage-bond pine and wishing stones. Before your gateway town food adventure begins, take a quiet moment in the grounds to pray for a delicious day ahead.
Tips
Admission to the grounds is free. Since you'll be walking a lot through the town, wear comfortable shoes. Parking is available around the shrine and throughout the gateway area, but weekends get crowded, so arriving early in the morning is reassuring. Early morning hours have fewer visitors and make for easier photos of the gate.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. The quiet, serene grounds before the gateway town shops open is ideal.
