Stroll through the gateway town sampling sweets while visiting the spring water fountains

About this spot

A shopping street that extends from the front of Aso Shrine, it's most distinctive for the scattered "mizuki" (水基)—fountains where spring water flows—throughout the street. The rainwater that falls on the Aso mountains is refined over long years into groundwater that springs forth from various points along the street, each with its own unique name. The street is lined with shops offering spring-water-infused pudding, dumplings, coffee, and other treats, and visiting the "mizuki" while sampling sweets is a unique pleasure of this town. Taking a sip of spring water between sweet treats is a luxurious experience possible only in a spring-water town.

Tips

Most spring water fountains are safe to drink from directly, but check the signage first. Bringing your own bottle allows you to carry spring water with you. Be mindful of proper etiquette by disposing of trash from your food purchases at the shops where you bought them. Morning hours are recommended for a leisurely stroll, as the crowds increase before and after noon on weekends.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 50 minutes. Just before the lunch rush offers the ideal time for a pleasant stroll.
