Your Journey Begins at the Black Station Building Designed by Isozaki Arata, Where Tourist Horse-Drawn Carriages Also Depart

About this spot

A station on the JR Kuokoku Line and the gateway to Yufuin sightseeing. The black-toned station building, designed by world-renowned architect Isozaki Arata from Oita Prefecture, features a uniquely designed waiting hall with a soaring, chapel-like open atrium, with the waiting room serving as an art hall. The platform includes a foot bath, transforming your train-waiting time into part of your travel experience. Tourist horse-drawn carriages depart from in front of the station toward Kinrin Lake, their hoofbeats echoing through the hot spring town as a morning tradition of Yufuin. The station's front approach, with Mount Yufu (由布岳) directly ahead, is a classic photo spot, and it's recommended to store large luggage in the station's coin lockers and travel light before exploring.

Tips

Deposit large baggage in the station's coin lockers to travel light while exploring. Tourist horse-drawn carriages are popular with limited seating, so if you wish to ride, check with the station information desk immediately upon arrival. The platform foot bath requires a ticket, making it best for those with extra time.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 30 minutes. The early morning is most pleasant, with fewer crowds and clear views of Mount Yufu.
