A small lake that symbolizes Yufuin, located beyond Yunotsubo Street. This rare lake has both hot spring water and fresh water welling up from its bottom, and due to the warm water temperature, mist rises from the lake surface on cold early mornings, creating a mystical landscape. The name is said to derive from the sight of fish scales gleaming golden in the sunset. The Tensho Shrine (天祖神社) torii gate stands on the lakeshore, and the lakeside promenade takes about 20 minutes to complete a full circuit. Enjoy the quiet time—a stark contrast to the bustling street—while feeling the breeze through the trees and listening to the water. Cafes and galleries dot the shore, perfect for taking a break while enjoying the lake views.
Tips
The promenade has sections with narrow passages where you'll encounter other walkers, so move slowly with strollers. For the best misty morning spectacle, plan a return visit on a cold early morning. Lakeside cafes fill their best viewing seats quickly, so arrive early if you want a break with a view.
