Japan's Longest Eight-Arch Stone Bridge, Affectionately Known as the Holland Bridge
About this spot
A stone arch bridge spanning the Yamakuni River and the only eight-arch stone bridge of its kind in Japan, it also holds the distinction of being the longest. The stone construction technique used here, common in the Nagasaki region, has earned it the affectionate nickname "Holland Bridge" (オランダ橋). The sight of the gently flowing arches reflected in the river surface is picturesque and beautiful, and the bridge is counted as one of the three famous Yaba Gorge bridges alongside Rakan-ji Bridge (羅漢寺橋) and Makei Bridge (馬渓橋). You can walk across the bridge and enjoy the peaceful gorge landscape while feeling the river breeze.
Tips
Parking space is available at the base of the bridge. To capture the entire bridge in a photo, descend to the riverbed and shoot from below looking up for the best angle. The view of the Yamakuni River flow from atop the bridge is also pleasant, making it worthwhile to stop by even for a brief visit.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes required. Mid-morning, when the sun is high and the arch shadows are sharply reflected in the river, is the best time.
