Kitsuki's Finest Scenic Slope Connecting the Samurai and Merchant Quarters

About this spot

The stone-paved slope descending from the samurai district's plateau into the merchant quarter—a landmark that represents the very face of Kitsuki tourism. At the foot of the slope, it faces Shioiya Slope directly across a merchant street, creating a picturesque composition. As you walk, you'll physically experience the unique geography of the 'sandwich-type castle town,' where high-ground samurai residences sandwich the low-lying merchant quarter. The merchant quarter below the slope is lined with long-established shops, souvenir vendors, and restaurants, and you'll see people in rental kimonos strolling about. The ups and downs of the slope, exploring side streets, and enjoying a castle town lunch all combine into two hours showcasing Kitsuki's charm in concentrated form.

Tips

The best photo angle is from the top of Shioiya Slope looking back at Suya Slope. The stone paving can be slippery when wet, so watch your footing. Lunch spots are convenient around the merchant quarter, but popular restaurants get crowded at midday, so arriving early is advised.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours required. Take your time photographing the slope scenery, exploring the side streets, and enjoying a leisurely castle town lunch.
