A Scenic Beach Stroll Where Mudflat Stripes Blush Crimson in the Sunset

About this spot

Facing the Suo Sea, this shallow beach is one of Oita Prefecture's finest sunset viewing spots. At low tide, expansive mudflats emerge with their characteristic striped patterns of sand and tidal pools layered in succession—a landscape uniquely beautiful. As twilight descends, these stripes shimmer with crimson hues in a beauty that takes your breath away. Located along the seaside drive route "Koi-Kanau Road" (恋叶ロード) on National Route 213, which is dotted with romantic spots, this beach is the perfect place to conclude your day. A leisurely walk along the shore, listening to the waves, brings a quiet and warm close to the day you've spent retracing time from the mythical grove through the Showa-era town.

Tips

The striped mudflat spectacle appears when low tide and sunset coincide, so check tidal times and sunset hours in advance. Wear shoes suitable for sand and mud if you plan to venture near the mudflats. Have your camera ready for sunset photos. Nearby food shops have limited hours, so bring drinks with you.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Sunset at high and low tide overlap is the best time to witness the striped mudflat spectacle.
