Concluding Your Journey at a Sunset Observation Point Overlooking Yufuin Basin
About this spot
An observation point at a pass with an elevation of approximately 680 meters along the Yamanami Highway connecting Yufuin and Beppu. Below spreads the Yufuin Basin with its rice paddies and hot spring town like a diorama, and beyond rises Yufu-dake spreading its majestic slopes—a scene worthy of a postcard. Known as a famous early morning mist spot (its name literally references mist), it sometimes offers views of a sea of clouds covering the basin in autumn and winter mornings. At sunset, the townscape bathes in crimson, and homes begin to light up—a moment perfect for slow observation. The viewing area is just a short walk from the parking lot, making it a convenient final scenic stop on your drive.
Tips
The pass is windy and cooler than the city below, so bring a jacket for evening visits. This is a popular viewing spot with limited parking, so be courteous during busy times. For photos, the moment just before sunset, when the sun is on the Yufu-dake side, is ideal. After sunset, mountain roads have many curves, so drive down carefully.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 30 minutes. Sunset time is when the Yufuin townscape glows crimson—the perfect way to end your day.
