Takachiho Gorge was formed as pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso's volcanic activity were eroded by the Gokase River, creating towering columnar basalt cliffs in a V-shaped valley. Designated as a nationally protected natural monument and scenic area, it represents the most iconic landscape of Takachiho, the Land of Myth. The highlight is Manai Waterfall, selected for Japan's One Hundred Selected Waterfalls. When viewed from a rental boat on the water, the white ribbon of water dropping approximately 17 meters displays both breathtaking majesty and serene beauty beyond compare. The promenade reveals continuing points of interest, including the Hermit's Folding Screen Rock and the Yari Flying Bridge, allowing visitors to experience the gorge's beauty from two perspectives—from the water's surface and from the cliffs above.

Tips

Rental boats are popular and can have long wait times during the day. Early morning use is your best bet. During high water, boats may cease operations, so check the official guidance for the day's operating status. Bring a towel as you may get splashed by waterfall mist. The promenade has many stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
