A temple known for its 17-meter-tall Kobo Daishi (弘法大師) statue standing at the summit of Imayama, overlooking Nobeoka city. The Daishi statue, said to be the largest in Japan, watches over the castle town with a serene expression and has been cherished by locals as a symbol of Nobeoka. As you climb the stone steps of the approach one by one, the townscape gradually emerges between the trees, and upon reaching the plaza where the statue stands, a sweeping panorama of Nobeoka city and the surrounding mountains unfolds before you. The temple is also known as the site of the Imayama Daishi Festival, which announces spring in Nobeoka, and the quiet early morning precincts are perfect for beginning your day. First, take in the full picture of the city from this vantage point, then venture out on your castle town stroll.

Tips

Stone steps continue near the summit, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In the morning, few people are visiting, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. For capturing both the Daishi statue and the city in one photo, the soft light of late morning is recommended. Allow extra time, as there is a short walk from the parking lot to the statue.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. The townscape view from the Daishi plaza is most beautiful in the morning when the air is clear.
