Historic Port Town of Bibi-tsu with Emperor Jinmu Legend and Merchant Shipping Warehouse

About this spot

Bibi-tsu, a port town in southern Hyuga City, prospered from the Edo through Meiji periods through the merchant shipping trade. Today, white-walled merchant warehouses continue to line the townscape, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. The museum occupies a reconstructed merchant shipping house, offering intimate glimpses into the trade through period account ledgers, living quarters, and shipping-related artifacts. Bibi-tsu is also renowned as the legendary departure point from which Emperor Jinmu sailed eastward on his imperial expedition, with historical sites related to this legend scattered throughout the town. After your visit, stroll leisurely through the narrow stone-paved "Tsuki-nuke" lanes and past latticed storefronts, absorbing the town's maritime heritage.

Tips

The preservation district is an active residential area; photograph respectfully, avoiding intrusion into homes. Narrow lanes are unsuitable for vehicles—park in designated areas and explore on foot. To fully appreciate the museum, surrounding historical sites, and the waterfront, plan sufficient time for leisurely walking and sightseeing.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon, when evening light gently illuminates the white walls, offers an especially pleasant townscape experience.
