An Archaeological Museum Where You Can Experience Ancient Hyuga Admission-Free

About this spot

A prefectural archaeological museum located on one corner of the Saito plateau where you can experience the world of ancient Hyuga. The wonderful news is that admission is free. Centered on artifacts unearthed from the Saito Kofun Group, the exhibits present the history of South Kyushu from the Old Stone Age through the Kofun period in an engaging, hands-on manner—you can touch objects and examine them closely. Ascending to the observation deck gives you a panoramic view of the kofun group plateau you're about to explore, helping you understand viscerally why the ancients chose this location. Previewing the museum before venturing onto the plateau is the best way to experience Saito to its fullest.

Tips

The exhibits are designed to be experienced through all five senses rather than by reading lengthy explanations, so ask the staff about displays that catch your eye—you'll discover much more. Gaining an overall sense of the plateau from the observation deck on the roof before viewing the exhibits will make your afternoon's itinerary feel much more three-dimensional. The interior is cool, so bringing a light jacket is reassuring.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Visiting right after opening allows you to enjoy both the exhibits and the observation deck in a relaxed atmosphere.
